General elections were held in Angola on 24 August 2022 to elect the President and National Assembly.Incumbent president João Lourenço is eligible for one more term.

Luanda, Angola (SN) | Angolans voted on 24 August to elect their new president for the next term 2022-2027.
The current president, João Lourenço, supported by the #MPLA party, which has been in power for decades, was elected with 51.07% of the votes. It was recorded that the percentage of votes in the capital, Luanda, went to the main opposition party, #UNITA.
The main competitor in these elections was Adalberto Costa Jr, who lost with 44.05% of the votes. Although the UNITA party lost, it is in itself a positive change, as it is the first time that the difference in votes between these two dominant parties has come to be so close.
The Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) is an Angolan political party oriented on the left-of-center spectrum, which has governed the country since its independence from Portugal in 1975.
The first president was the late José Dos Santos who died this year followed by the re-elected president José Lourenço.
The 44.05% of Angolans who voted for UNITA and consequently for Adalberto Costa Junior are deeply unhappy with the results of the elections.
Once the provisional results were announced, there were riots in Angola where at least one dead was seen lying in the street.
In Portugal, hundreds of Angolans gathered around the Angolan Embassy where the police have to intervene. Several media sources reported that at least one police officer was injured after being hit by a rock on the tip.
In several accounts on social media, supporters of Adalberto Costa Jr expressed their displeasure with publications that clearly state that, at least for them, the president is Adalberto Costa Jr.
That is the case of Gilmeiro Vemba who published on his IG account : “The president is Adalberto Costa Jr, the rest is false”
What do the people want? It’s quite simple, a country where they matter. But most importantly, a country where people can work, use their diplomas and leave poverty in the past, something that, according to the Angolan people, has not been possible since 1975.
For those who voted for the losing party, it means another five years under the ruling MPLA environment.
