Joppa, Maryland (SN) – On Friday, September 6, 2024, Joppatowne High School was the scene of a tragic shooting that has left the community in shock and mourning. A 15-year-old student, identified as Waren Curtis Grant, was fatally shot by a fellow student during an altercation in a school bathroom. The incident occurs only two days after the shooting on Winder, Georgia.

The incident occurred just after 12:30 p.m. inside a first-floor men’s bathroom at Joppatowne High School. According to Harford County Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler, a 16-year-old student allegedly shot Grant during a fight. The suspect fled the scene but was apprehended within minutes thanks to the quick response of community members and law enforcement.
School nurses and the principal were among the first to attend to Grant, who was then airlifted to a trauma center. Despite their efforts, Grant succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The swift response from more than 100 police officers and paramedics helped to secure the scene and provide immediate care.
The shooting has deeply affected the Joppatowne community. Principal Melissa Williams expressed her sorrow and solidarity with the students and staff, emphasizing the strength and unity of the community.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of this amazing young man ─ with his friends, with all of our staff members ─ with all of our students,” she said during a news conference.
The Harford County Sheriff’s Office is conducting a thorough investigation into the shooting. The suspect, who has not been publicly identified due to his age, is expected to be charged as an adult. Authorities are working to understand the circumstances that led to this tragic event and to ensure justice is served.
