London, Kentucky (SN) – On the evening of September 7, 2024, a tragic shooting incident occurred near Interstate 75, just north of the small city of London, Kentucky. The event has left the community in shock and authorities in a frantic search for the suspect.
At approximately 6:36 PM, the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office reported an active shooter situation near I-75. Multiple individuals were shot in what authorities described as a chaotic and terrifying scene. The highway was immediately shut down in both directions at exit 49 as law enforcement and emergency services rushed to the scene.
Laurel County Sheriff’s Facebook page published that, the suspected gunman has been identified Joseph A. Couch, a 32-year-old fugitive. Couch is believed to have opened fire indiscriminately, causing injuries to several people¹. As of the latest reports, he remains at large, and a manhunt is underway to apprehend him.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has been actively monitoring the situation and has offered support to local authorities. The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is also involved in the investigation, assisting state police and local law enforcement in their efforts to locate and capture the suspect.
“The Suspect has not been caught at this time we are urging people to stay inside!!We will try our best to get you as much information as it becomes available!!” Kentucky State Police Trooper Scottie Pennington wrote on Facebook
The shooting has left the residents of London and the surrounding areas in a state of fear and uncertainty. The closure of the highway has disrupted travel and caused significant delays, adding to the community’s distress. Local officials have urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
