The hip-hop community is mourning the loss of Dequantes Devontay Lamar, better known by his stage name Rich Homie Quan. The Atlanta rapper, who rose to fame with his 2013 hit “Type of Way,” passed away on Thursday at the age of 34.

Rich Homie Quan was born on October 4, 1989, in Atlanta, Georgia. He began his music career in the early 2010s, quickly gaining attention with his unique style and catchy hooks. His breakout single, “Type of Way,” became an anthem and solidified his place in the hip-hop scene. The song’s success led to collaborations with major artists like Meek Mill and Jeezy.


Quan’s career was marked by several notable achievements. His 2015 mixtape, “If You Ever Think I Will Stop Goin’ In Ask RR (Royal Rich),” featured the hit single “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh),” which was certified triple platinum². He also released his debut album, “Rich as in Spirit,” in 2018 under Motown Records.


Rich Homie Quan died at an Atlanta hospital, as confirmed by the Fulton County Medical Examiner. The cause of death has not been disclosed, and an autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact circumstances³. Tributes have poured in from fans and fellow artists, with many expressing their shock and sorrow over his untimely passing.


Quan’s influence on the hip-hop genre is undeniable. His music resonated with many, and his contributions to the Rich Gang collective, alongside artists like Young Thug and Birdman, further cemented his legacy. Despite facing legal and personal challenges, Quan remained a beloved figure in the music industry.


Fellow artists and fans have taken to social media to pay their respects.

R&B singer Jacquees, who collaborated with Quan on the 2014 single “Feel It,” shared an emotional tribute, saying, “Rest in peace my brother Rich Homie Quan. I love you for life”.

Boosie Badazz also expressed his grief, alleging that Quan died of a drug overdose.
