Barrow County, Georgia (SN) – On September 4, 2024, a tragic shooting at Apalachee High School left four people dead and nine others injured. The suspected shooter, identified as 14-year-old Colt Gray, had been previously investigated by the FBI in 2023 for making online threats to commit a school shooting, confirmed the authorities in a press conference.

In May 2023, the FBI received reports of online threats that were traced back to Colt Gray¹. These threats prompted a thorough investigation, during which local police were also involved. Despite the investigation, no immediate action was taken against Gray at that time, as the threats were not deemed credible enough to warrant further intervention, reports the GBI. The 14-year-old was interviewed by the FBI’s Atlanta field office and local sheriff’s office.

The suspect, then 13, was a possible suspect in connection with threats made online last year using photos of guns, the FBI’s Atlanta field office said in a joint statement with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

The shooting at Apalachee High School occurred at approximately 10:20 a.m. on September 4, 2024. Gray entered the school and opened fire, resulting in the deaths of two students and two teachers, and injuring nine others². The swift response of a school resource officer led to Gray’s surrender shortly after the shooting began.

The four victims were identifud during the press conference as :

  1. 🔹 Mason Schermerhorn (14)
  2. 🔹Christian Angulo (14, no picture)
  3. 🔹 Richard Aspinwall
  4. 🔹 Christina Irimine

Authorities are now focused on understanding the motive behind this horrific act. Investigators are looking into various aspects of Gray’s life, including his mental health, social interactions, and any potential grievances he may have had¹². The community of Barrow County is in shock and mourning, with vigils and prayer services being held to support the victims’ families and the broader school community.

Local leaders and the White House have expressed their condolences and emphasized the need for measures to prevent such tragedies in the future¹. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on providing support to those affected and ensuring the safety of students and staff.

This tragic event has once again highlighted the urgent need for comprehensive measures to address school safety and mental health issues among students. The community’s resilience and unity will be crucial in the healing process.

The suspect’s motives remain unknown.
