San Jose, CA (SN) | In a heartbreaking incident that has shocked the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater community, 21-year-old gymnast Kara Welsh was fatally shot near the campus. The suspect, Chad T. Richards, a 23-year-old man who knew Welsh, has been arrested and charged with her murder, according to NBC News.
The tragic event occurred on the evening of August 30, 2024, at an apartment on Whitewater Street, just a block from the university campus. According to police reports, an altercation between Welsh and Richards escalated, leading to Richards shooting Welsh multiple times. She was pronounced dead at the scene when officers arrived.
Kara Welsh was a standout member of the Warhawk gymnastics team and a business management major from Plainfield, Illinois. She won an individual national title on the vault in 2023 and was known for her exceptional athletic abilities and vibrant personality.
“To put into words the impact Kara had on the Warhawk community is impossible,” said her coach, Jen Regan. “A powerful athlete, dedicated teammate, and the light in everyone’s dark days, Kara truly lifted each and every one of us up in her time as a Warhawk gymnast”.
Chad T. Richards was arrested at the scene and taken to Walworth County Jail. He has been charged with first-degree intentional homicide, endangering safety by the use of a dangerous weapon, and disorderly conduct while armed.
Richards is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, and the investigation is ongoing Newsweek reports.
The news of Welsh’s death has left the university community in mourning. University Chancellor Corey King expressed his condolences, stating, “We know the news of Kara’s death is heartbreaking for our close-knit university community. It is a time when we are all called upon to support one another, to process, and to grieve”.
USA Gymnastics also offered their condolences, saying,
“We offer our deepest condolences to Kara’s family, friends, and teammates at @UWWGymnastics”.
