Ousting Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina

At least 300 people have been killed in Bangladesh as clashes erupted between police and anti-government protesters who are demanding that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina step down.

The unrest comes as student leaders have declared a campaign of civil disobedience to demand. Student-led protesters originally opposed to a job quota system had called for the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the South Asian country’s longest-serving leader.

Sheikh Hasina has flown to India on a military helicopter as protesters in Bangladesh have stormed her official residence.

What started as a protest against a quota system for government jobs in Bangladesh has turned into widespread looting and rioting across the country, with the minority community, mainly Hindus, coming under attack.

Houses and business establishments of Hindus were attacked by mobs and their valuables were also looted in at least 27 districts.

Reuters reports that in Dhaka, a number of Hindu temples, households and businesses were vandalised, women assaulted and at least two Hindu leaders affiliated with the Awami League party killed in violence in Bangladesh following the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

“We have compiled some incidents of the vandalisms in different parts of the country exposing the Hindu and other minority communities to anxiety,”

said, Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council leader Kajol Debnath.

According to the available information, two Hindu leaders, who were incidentally leaders of Hasina’s Awami League (AL) party, were killed in north-western Sirajganj and Rangpur, Debnath said, adding that the Council was still gathering more information.
