Russian President Vladimir Putin defended today, 12, that confrontation with anti-Russian forces in Ukraine was inevitable and only a matter of time, due to the growth of neo-Nazism in the neighboring country.
Moscow, Russia | By invading Ukraine on 24 February, Russia claimed that it intended to “demilitarize and denazify” the neighboring country.
Putin reaffirmed that the “special military operation” in Ukraine, as the invasion is officially called by Moscow, is aimed at helping the people of Ukraine’s breakaway Donbass region and “ensuring the security of Russia itself.”
“Obviously, we had no other choice, that’s for sure. And there is no doubt that the objectives will be achieved,” Putin told Russian space industry workers.
“The objectives are absolutely understandable and noble,” he insisted.
Putin said Russia was forced to help the people of Donbass “because the Ukrainian authorities, pushed by the West, refused to comply with the Minsk Accords with a view to a peaceful resolution of problems” in this warring region of eastern Ukraine. with Kiev since 2014.
“It was simply impossible to continue enduring this genocide, which lasted eight years,” he said. Putin also said that the West will not be able to isolate Russia with the sanctions enacted following the invasion of Ukraine.
“It is certainly impossible to isolate anyone in the world today, especially a country as big as Russia,” he argued.
The Russian President assured that Moscow will work with its partners “who want to cooperate” to overcome the crisis caused by international sanctions.
Putin claimed that as early as 2014, when Russia was sanctioned for having annexed the Ukrainian Crimean peninsula, Russian agriculture managed to transform itself into a high-tech industry.
He also said that, in 1961, the then Soviet Union was in complete isolation from a technological point of view, but it had achieved important achievements, such as the launch of the first artificial earth satellite and the first cosmonaut to travel in space.
“We did everything under conditions of complete technological isolation, we achieved very great successes”, he said, quoted by the EFE and AP agencies.
Putin’s visit to Vostochny marked his first known trip outside Moscow since Russia invaded Ukraine.
In a message to Russian aerospace forces that are providing “assistance to the people’s republics of Donbass”, Putin said they “act with courage, competence, efficiency and effectiveness, and use the most modern types of weapons with unique and unparalleled characteristics”.
The war in Ukraine, which entered its 48th day today, has resulted in an as-yet-undetermined number of civilian and military casualties.
The UN confirmed the deaths of 1,842 civilians as of Sunday, including 148 children, but warned that the actual numbers “are considerably higher”. The war also led to the flight of another 11 million people, including 4.5 million to neighboring countries, in what is considered the worst refugee crisis in Europe since the Second World War (1939-1945).
The United Nations estimates that around 13 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance due to the war in Ukraine.
The international community reacted to the Russian invasion with economic and political sanctions against Moscow, and with the supply of arms to Kiev.
