NyNy Ryke, Where Tradition And Modernity Meet

NyNy Ryke | Let’s focus on this fashion brand that upcoming brand which describes itself as an Ethically Chic Apparel brand designed in London made in Togo and Italy. Nyny Ryke is an Ethical Fashion brand officially founded in 2014 initially producing a “niche brand” and “made-to-measure” designs.

I don’t belong to just one culture.

NyNy (pronounced nini) Ryke is not just a fashion brand name, it is has an actual meaning behind it. It is a combination of words which means ” Only sweetness “, ” Cuteness” or ” So good” in the designer’s dialect which is Kabyé, from Togo. Togo , officially the Togolese Republic, is a country in West Africa. It is bordered by Ghana to the west, Benin to the east and Burkina Faso to the north

Although she was born in Togo, Nyny’s brand isn’t just focused on African Fashion. She was born in Togo, raised in Italy and had been leaving in London. The brand is a mixture of these three different realities which in turn brings a balance that materializes into the core of the brand.

Fashion Is To Nyny Ryke What Nyny Ryke Is To Fashion

I’m an artist, I just create. I’m not in fashion for business, I’m in it to express myself

Our Designs Are For Everyone

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing vestibulum. Fringilla nec accumsan eget, facilisis mi justo, luctus pellentesque vitae gravida non diam accumsan posuere, venenatis at mi turpis.

NyNy Ryke creates her colorful ethical chic designs by staying up-to-date with the latest trends. But her fashion is different, because no matter what the trend is, Ryke would take that trend and then turn into into her own fashion. That’s why there is no other designs like hers.

Although her brand caters to everybody, Ryke would like to stay within her culture when it comes to fabrics. She designs and creates her own “Kente” patterns with the help of a cooperative of women located in Togo with whom she’s been working for five years.

What’s even better about this partnership is that, the earnings go towards building ateliers for women in Togo as well as training young girls in the designing.

Driven By a Purpose, I want to bring back the [African] tradition but in a reasonable way

“I want to make everyone look good and feel good with my creative fabrics and patterns helping to promote also the Italo-Togolese craftsmanship.

Today, as a brand, Nyny Ryke’s purpose is clear. She wants to bring Kente designs “out there” to keep the [African] tradition going for all fabrics, not just “Kente”. Achieving that purpose will also help the cooperative of women she’s working with to keep working, build ateliers for themselves but also continue to train young girls in the art of designing.

But the road to being a brand wasn’t always easy. Being a black woman comes with challenges.

After earning a Degree in Fashion & Textile Designer at NABA, and specialized at Istituto Secoli, both in Milan, the designer worked for small fashion firms to gain experience into the field.

During that time, I was most often than not the only black person in the company, says the designer

Ryke had to go through discrimination as a Black Woman within the fashion design industry. The discrimination was felt more “as a black woman” rather than “as a woman“, says the designer. “At some point, you just have to learn to deal with it, you have to do something about it“, she adds.

“In Rome do like the Romans” –Taking her discrimination experiences into account and turning them into a strength of her own, she found the best way to deal with discrimination, she calls it “integration“. You just need to put yourself out there, to learn about the locals and their traditions. Although she thought about giving up on her dream as a designer, those experiences with discrimination and the obstacles she was faced with did not stop her from moving forward and achieving her goals. Knowing full well the obstacles that aspiring youngsters might face, she encourages them to do the same “Don’t Give Up On Your Dreams”, she says.
