Peru | 35 Years In Prison For Illegal Police “Death Squad”
Peru | Three former Peruvian police officers, designated as instigators of a “death squad” which committed between 20 and 30 extrajudicial executions of suspected criminals between 2009 and 2016, were sentenced on Thursday March 3 to 35 years in prison.
A former police commander and two policemen “belonged to a criminal organization that recruited people prone to commit crimes under the guise of false operations, that is, they had a criminal purpose”, the police said Peruvian justice.
Former commander Raul Prado Ravines and officers Carlos Llanto Ponce and Williams Castano Martinez — all on the run — “belonged to a criminal organization that recruited people prone to committing crimes under the cover of false operations during which people died,” the criminal court said.
Seven other defendants were previously sentenced to terms ranging from 21 to 26 years in prison. The special police unit acted with impunity under the guise of fighting organized crime.
These recorded “results” had allowed the police officers involved to rise in rank or to be decorated for their fight against crime.
