Ahmaud Arbery Murder | Thirty potential jurors were selected Monday in the federal hate crimes trial against the three men charged with killing Ahmaud Arbery.
The court is looking to select 36 potential jurors for the trial before choosing the 12 and four alternates that will sit in on the trial.
Travis McMichael, Gregory McMichael and William “Roddie” Bryan are facing a total of five federal counts in connection to the killing. About 1,000 people living in the southern district of Georgia were summoned for questioning in the trial.
About 50 people are called in a day for preliminary questioning.
U.S. District Court Judge Lisa Godbey Wood predicted before adjourning that a final panel of 12 main jurors and four alternates will be seated at the beginning of next week on Feb. 14. That was after she deemed 30 of the 52 jury pool members questioned Monday capable of serving fairly.
All three men were sentenced to life in prison. Both Travis and Gregory McMichael were sentence to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Last week, a plea bargain in which the McMichaels would have been able to spent their sentences in a federal prison as opposed to a state prison was rejected.
Wanda Cooper-Jones, the mother of Ahmaud Arbery firmly opposed the plea deal.

A neighbor, William “Roddie” Bryan, joined the pursuit in his own truck and recorded cellphone video of Travis McMichael blasting Arbery with a shotgun.
