Richfield School Shooting | A Large police presence at Richfield’s South Education Center school after reported shooting.

The gunfire occurred shortly after noon in the 7400 block of S. Penn Avenue, according to emergency dispatch audio. That address is for the South Education Center, an alternative school in Minnesota.

Local and federal authorities are on the scene of a shooting outside a Richfield school.

FBI spokesman Michael Kulstad said his agency was responding to a reported shooting, but he said he had no details. The ATF also was responding.

At about 1 p.m. the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ St. Paul division tweeted its special agents “are responding to reports of a shooting near a school in Richfield, Minnesota”.

As of 12:45 p.m., numerous squad cars and emergency vehicles – including an ambulance – were outside the school, which offers specialized programming and support staff for pre-K through Transition students.

Two people were shot, at least one critically, and the shooter or shooters were believed to have left the scene in a vehicle, allowing ambulances to arrive, the audio continued.

The scanner claimed that the shooter or shooters fled the scene in a vehicle.

Residents who live across the street said on social media they heard multiple gunshots.

The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms confirmed that the shooting occurred “near a school in Richfield,” the agency said in a tweet. “This is a developing situation.”

At 1:30 p.m. buses arrived to pick up students from Blessed Trinity Catholic School. Parents of students were told to gather in the Donaldson Park area to wait for information.

Nearby Richfield Middle School sent a message to parents telling them that police, with weapons drawn, & emergency medical workers had shown up at the school by mistake in response to an emergency call from South Education Center.

The message said the call had nothing to do with the middle school.
