Southbound Highway 99 in Sacramento has reopened hours after a wrong-way crash killed an Elk Grove officer Friday morning.

The other driver involved, identified as 31-year-old Jermain J. Walton, of Sacramento, was arrested under suspicion of DUI, and booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on several felony DUI-related charges.

Sacramento County Court records show Walton received a previous DUI charge in 2018 he pled no contest to. He was sentenced to informal probation.

Southbound Highway 99 in Sacramento has reopened hours after a wrong-way crash killed an Elk Grove officer Friday morning.

The officer had been riding a motorcycle on the way to work when hit by the wrong-way driver, authorities said. Police Chief Timothy Albright later said the officer, a six-year veteran of the force, had died.

The wrong-way driver is cooperating with the investigation, CHP said. It’s unclear whether alcohol or drugs were involved in the crash.
Caltrans says the roadway is estimated to reopen around noon.

The crash happened just after 5 a.m. Friday. The California Highway Patrol [CHP] reported receiving a call about a crash involving an Elk Grove motorcycle officer.

CHP said the other car, a dark colored Dodge, involved was potentially a wrong way driver. The driver of the Dodge reported no significant injuries.

The officer is reported to have had major injuries.

Multiple ramps in the area were closed due to the shutdown, including: Business 80 ramp near N Street and the US-50 east ramp closed to south Hwy. 99. A second accident was reported in the backup, but details are limited on that accident.

The Elk Grove Police Department [EGPD] held a press conference just before 11 a.m. to announce the death of the officer hit by the wrong-way driver earlier this morning.

According to Chief Timothy Albright of EGPD, the officer involved in the crash was a six-year veteran of the EGPD.

“We are deeply saddened and grieve for our law enforcement family, the family of our officer, and for our community,” Albright said.

“Unfortunately, our officer succumbed to his injuries,” Police Chief Timothy Albright said during a brief news conference outside UC Davis Medical Center.

The department will hold a longer news conference Friday afternoon with additional details about the incident, spokesman Sgt. Jason Jimenez said.

A large group of people from law enforcement agencies across the area were gathering at UC Davis Medical Center where the injured officer was being treated Friday morning, KCRA 3’s Erin Heft reported.

Squad cars from departments representing Elk Grove, Woodland, Davis, and Sacramento were there to show support for the officer.
