The son of a Mississippi police officer was found dead on Sunday, and the young man’s mother was one of the responding officers.

The son of a Hazlehurst police officer was found dead on a road on Sunday, January 2.

Hazlehurst Police Chief Darion Murray said officers responded to a report of a body on Larkin Street. The body was identified as Charles Stewart Jr.


WJTV reports that Stewart was initially found to have died of a gunshot to the head, but that a medical examiner is still working to confirm his cause of death. No suspects are in custody.

According to Dark Horse Press, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has taken over as the lead investigating agency, due to the victim’s connection to the Hazlehurst Police Department, but reports suggest that HPD may still have some involvement.
