Brazilian singer Marília Mendonça has died in a plane crash at the age of 26.
CNN Brazil reports Mendonça was en route to a concert at the time of the crash, which killed four other people in addition to the Latin Grammy winner. The small plane flew out of Santa Genoveva airport in Goiânia Friday afternoon, headed to Minas Gerais, before it crashed in Piedade de Caratinga, a municipality north of Rio de Janeiro.

An official statement posted to the singer’s Instagram page confirmed the news.
“With immense regret, we confirm the death of singer-songwriter Marília Mendonça, her producer Henrique Ribeiro, her uncle and advisor Abicieli Silveira Dias Filho, and the pilot and co-pilot, of which we won’t reveal their names at this time,” the statement read, per Billboard. “The plane took off from Goiania to Caratinga where Marília would perform tonight. At the moment, this is all the information we have.”
Another post on Português, published on her account by her Communication Team states that “those whom would like to say their final farewells could come to the Goiania Arena between 1pm and 3pm, local time. It is an event open to the public“
The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but in a statement on Friday, the Minas Gerais Electric Company (CEMIG) said Mendonça’s plane had hit a cable on an electric tower belonging to the power firm.
Minas Gerais police chief Ivan Lopes Sales said at a news conference Friday that it was still too early to determine the cause of the crash but added the dispersed debris field suggested the aircraft had “hit something before the plane fell.”
